HERITAGE - Legacy of the industrial revolution, the Garrit metal bridge has spanned the Dordogne since 1894. Closed to automobile traffic in 1991, the bridge should, thanks to the involvement of an association which includes Francis Cabrel, Claude Villers and Georges Pernoud , will soon be reopened to pedestrians.

""Just cross the bridge»… In Périgord Noir, it was not always so easy to cross the Dordogne. Until the last decades of the 19th century, it was necessary to call on the ferryman and take the ferry to go from Berbiguières (left bank) to Saint-Cyprien (just opposite) in a straight line. Natives not inclined to river hazards could also, from 1850, use the Siorac bridge about 7 kilometers downstream.

For safety reasons, the Garrit bridge was closed to pedestrian traffic in 2019. It was no longer accessible to cars since 1991.

Built between 1892 and 1894 to replace the ancestral ferry and transport men, animals, tobacco then tractors and cars, the Garrit bridge today opens to gentle roaming after being saved from a predictable obsolescence.
